The Red Deer RCMP say the General Investigation Section began a drug trafficking investigation in March 2026 and executed seven search warrants simultaneously on September 10 across Red Deer, Innisfail, Airdrie and a rural area north of Sundre, Alberta, seizing over six kilograms of cocaine, over $280,000 in cash, over 1.4 kilograms of psilocybin mushrooms, over 600 grams of methamphetamine, an ‘uzi’ style sub-machine gun, three handguns and ammunition. Rory Brand, 37, of Airdrie is charged with eleven counts, eight of them weapons counts, and was remanded into custody after a Judicial Interim Release Hearing. Robert Newell, 43, of Red Deer is charged with two counts and was released with conditions. Both were scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on October 1. The release names no criminal organization and lays no criminal organization offence, and it does not say which of the seven locations produced which seized item. Both men are presumed innocent. The Red Deer Advocate first reported the arrests on October 1; the release as posted by the City of Red Deer carries an October 2 stamp.

The Seven Warrants

According to the release, the investigation opened in March 2026 and ran over several months, during which police say they identified two suspects and multiple locations of interest. On September 10, 2026 officers executed seven search warrants at once across central Alberta. The release itemises the places searched as three private residences, a business, two camper trailers and a motor vehicle, spread across Red Deer, Innisfail, Airdrie and a rural area north of Sundre. It does not give a civic address for any of them, does not name the business, and does not attribute any single seized item to any one of the seven locations.

The Seizure List

The release states that the operation produced over six kilograms of cocaine, over $280,000 of cash currency, over 1.4 kilograms of psilocybin mushrooms, over 600 grams of methamphetamine, an ‘uzi’ style sub-machine gun, three handguns, ammunition, and other items it describes as consistent with drug trafficking. Every quantity is published as a minimum, in the force’s own wording. No firearm is given a make, model or calibre beyond the ‘uzi’ style description, and the release does not say whether any of the four guns was loaded.

The Eleven Counts Against Rory Brand

Brand, described in the release as a 37-year-old resident of Airdrie, is charged as the force words the counts: possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking (x2); possession of proceeds of crime over $5000; possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose; possession of a firearm knowing possession is unauthorized (x3); possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition (x2); possession of a weapon obtained by crime; and tamper with serial number of a firearm. That is eleven counts (2 + 1 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 11): two trafficking, one proceeds, and eight weapons counts. The release says that following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing he was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on October 1, 2026. It does not say what happened at that appearance.

The tampering count is a charge, not a description of an exhibit: the release does not describe any seized firearm as having an altered serial number, and does not say which of the four guns any weapons count attaches to.

The Two Counts Against Robert Newell

Newell, described as a 43-year-old resident of Red Deer, is charged with possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of proceeds of crime over $5000. The release says that following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing he was released with conditions and was scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on October 1, 2026. It does not state what those conditions are. The words “prohibition”, “release order” and “bail” appear nowhere in the document, and it does not say whether either man was bound by any court order at the time of the searches.

The Force’s Own Words on Organized Crime

Two officers are quoted. Cst. Nichole Fortin of the Red Deer RCMP GIS says: “This investigation required collaboration between various RCMP Units & Detachments. These seizures removed significant quantities of dangerous substances from our communities which demonstrate our commitment to attacking drug trafficking and organized crime in our neighbourhoods.” Insp. Jeff McBeth of the Red Deer RCMP says: “This investigation resulted in the seizure of significant quantities of illicit drugs, cash, and firearms that would otherwise have been distributed throughout our communities. Thanks to the dedication of our investigators and the collaborative efforts of our policing partners, we were able to disrupt organized criminal activity, remove dangerous drugs and firearms from circulation, and help keep our communities safe.”

Those are the force’s characterisations of its own work. No criminal organization offence has been laid against either accused, and no gang, club, family, syndicate or cartel is named anywhere in the release.

Why This Sits on the Beat

Central Alberta sits outside the primary footprint of this beat, and the concrete features that put the file on it are these: over six kilograms of cocaine and over $280,000 in cash; an ‘uzi’ style sub-machine gun and three handguns, with eight of Brand’s eleven counts being weapons counts; and seven warrants executed at once in four communities in an investigation led by the Red Deer RCMP General Investigation Section, which the release says required collaboration between various RCMP units and detachments. The release acknowledges as partnering units and agencies the Red Deer Police Dog Service, the Red Deer Downtown Patrol Unit, the RCMP Emergency Response Team and the Airdrie, Innisfail and Sundre RCMP.

What the release does not publish

  • Arrest dates: the document says two suspects have been arrested and charged, but gives no date for either arrest and no date for either Judicial Interim Release Hearing.
  • Allocation: which of the seven searched locations produced the cocaine, the cash, the sub-machine gun or any handgun.
  • Firearm detail: no make, model or calibre beyond ‘uzi’ style, and no statement of whether any gun was loaded.
  • Prior orders: the words “prohibition”, “release order” and “bail” do not appear; “conditions” appears once, in “released with conditions”.
  • Court outcome: what happened at the October 1 appearances, and any further date.
  • Addresses and file number: no civic addresses, no name for the business searched, and no file or occurrence number.

Neither Rory Brand nor Robert Newell has had any charge tested in court, and both are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Every allegation here is the RCMP’s, and the charge wording is copied from the force’s own release. No gang, outlaw motorcycle club, crime family, syndicate or cartel label has been applied, because no source has applied one and no criminal organization offence has been laid; the references to organized crime in the two quotations are the officers’ characterisations of their own work, not an allegation about either accused. Central Alberta lies outside the primary footprint of this beat; the file sits on it because of over six kilograms of cocaine, over $280,000 in cash, an ‘uzi’ style sub-machine gun and three handguns, eight weapons counts against one accused, and seven simultaneous warrants in four communities with six partnering RCMP and Red Deer units acknowledged by the force. The release mentions no publication ban.
