The Fire Was Controlled Fast and the House Was Barely Marked, but the Scene Examination Turned Up an Accelerant: a Vehicle Burns in a Driveway on Rue Leclerc in LaSalle and the SPVM Has Posted Nothing About It Itself (September 18, 2026)

LASALLE — A car went up in a driveway on rue Leclerc, near rue Miller, at about eleven o’clock on Thursday night. Firefighters had it out quickly and the house behind it came away with what police call minor damage. On the face of it, a small file. Then investigators examined the scene and found an accelerant — and a burnt car in a driveway became a deliberately set fire at somebody’s front door.

What Happened on Rue Leclerc

The alert was raised at 23h00 on Thursday, September 17, 2026. When emergency services reached the address, the vehicle parked in the driveway of the residence was in flames. Firefighters brought the blaze under control rapidly.

Jeanne Drouin, spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal, told La Presse that examination of the scene “permitted the observation of the presence of an accelerant which gives cause to believe the fire would have been lit deliberately.” That is the finding the whole file turns on, and it is the only investigative conclusion the SPVM has offered.

The residence sustained only minor damage. Nobody was hurt. The suspect or suspects had left before police arrived, and no arrest has been reported. The vehicle was towed so that an expert examination could be carried out as part of the investigation.

The Driveway Is the Point

A vehicle burned on a street is one thing. A vehicle burned in the driveway of a house, with an accelerant, is another. The car was not parked at a curb or in a lot; it was on private property, a few metres from a front door, and whoever lit it accepted that the fire could take the house with it. That it did not is down to the fire service arriving fast enough that the residence came away with minor damage.

The SPVM does not characterise the fire as targeted, does not say whose vehicle it was, and does not say whether the occupants of the residence and the owner of the vehicle are the same people. Those are the questions that would separate a grudge from a warning, and none of them has been answered.

No Communique, Only a Spokesperson

There is no written SPVM release on this file. The force’s public account of it exists as a set of quoted remarks from Jeanne Drouin to a newspaper, carried by La Presse at 7:48 a.m. on Friday, September 18 under Karim Benessaieh’s byline. Nothing had been posted to the SPVM’s own newsroom at time of filing.

That is ordinary for an incident of this size in Montreal — the service reserves written communiques for larger files — but it has consequences for the record. There is no occurrence number to follow. There is no named investigative unit, so it is not public whether this has gone to arson investigators, to the borough station, or anywhere else. And there is no file to check back against when, or if, an arrest follows.

What Is Still Not Reported

No damage estimate for either the vehicle or the residence. No indication of whether anyone was inside the house. No unit assignment. And no gang, criminal organization or outlaw motorcycle club has been named by the SPVM in connection with this fire. None is named here either. In a city where vehicle arsons have repeatedly turned out to be conflict-related, the temptation is to assume; the force has stated nothing, and this briefing will not put a label on a file police have not labelled.
