Seven people — five men and two women aged 28 to 39 — were arrested on Wednesday, October 28 in the Sûreté du Québec drug operation in the Baie-des-Chaleurs and the Restigouche, CIEU-FM and CIMT CHAU report, and officers searched ten residences and 19 vehicles in New Richmond, Cascapédia-Saint-Jules, Gesgapegiag, New Carlisle and Campbellton, New Brunswick. CIMT CHAU puts the seizures at about $110,000 in Canadian currency and nearly US$13,000, 20 hunting weapons, five handguns and one long gun, about $25,000 in offence-related property, about 1,000 grams of dried cannabis, nearly 530 grams of cocaine, nearly 1,500 prescription medications, a dozen cellphones and various documents. Two men, both 31, appeared at the New Carlisle courthouse and remain detained with a return date on Friday; CIEU-FM reports the five others were released on a promise to appear. This updates the October 28 report on the same operation.
Legal status: Two accused appeared at the New Carlisle courthouse and remain detained, with a return date on Friday; CIEU-FM reports five others were released on a promise to appear. None of the allegations has been tested in court and all are presumed innocent.
The Two Men Who Appeared
CIEU-FM names the two who appeared as Tyson Shawn Astels, 31, and Corey Wiinikainen, 31, and says they appeared at the New Carlisle courthouse on charges related to drug trafficking. CIMT CHAU gives the same two names and says Astels is from Cascapédia-Saint-Jules and Wiinikainen from Gesgapegiag. CIMT CHAU’s October 28 report spells the first surname Astles.
On Wiinikainen, CIMT CHAU reports that he is charged with possession of substances for the purpose of trafficking in relation to events on April 30 and June 24, that the Gesgapegiag police took part in his arrest at his residence, and that he appeared on Wednesday afternoon and remains detained pending a Friday return.
The Warrant Arrest of Tyson Astels
CIMT CHAU reported on October 28 that Astels was arrested on Wednesday morning on a warrant for breaching a conditional sentence order, that he was sentenced in September 2025 to house arrest for possession and storage of firearms without a licence, and that no other charge had been laid against him at that point. CIEU-FM, reporting on October 29, says the two men who appeared did so on charges related to drug trafficking.
