A man was shot near Queen Street East and Rutherford Road in Brampton on February 3, 2022. Four years, seven months and nineteen days later, Peel Regional Police arrested the man they have charged roughly 1,800 kilometres away, in Cross Lake, Manitoba, and announced it on Thursday. Nakeem Jamar Johnson, 36, faces seventeen counts, the first two of them attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Conspiracy requires a second party. The release names none, describes none, and does not say that anyone else is outstanding.

What Peel Regional Police published

The force says the investigation began on February 3, 2022, when officers responded to a shooting in the area of Queen Street East and Rutherford Road in Brampton. An adult male victim had sustained gunshot wounds that the release describes as causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The victim is not named and no age is given.

On May 8, 2023, officers executed search warrants across the Greater Toronto Area. Those warrants produced five firearms, approximately 10 kilograms of methamphetamine, and quantities of fentanyl and cocaine that the release calls significant without weighing either. Ten kilograms of methamphetamine is a wholesale figure, not a street quantity, and the release does not say which of the GTA addresses produced it, how many addresses there were, or in what municipalities they stood.

A Canada-wide warrant for Johnson was issued in 2023. The release gives no date for that warrant. On September 22, 2026, investigators with the Major Crime Unit arrested him in Cross Lake, Manitoba, with the assistance of the RCMP. He was transported to Brampton and held for a bail hearing. The announcement came nine days after the arrest.

The seventeen counts, in the force’s own wording

  1. Attempted Murder
  2. Conspiracy to Commit Murder
  3. Possession of a Firearm
  4. Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking — two counts
  5. Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession — four counts
  6. Possession of a Loaded Prohibited Firearm — four counts
  7. Possession of a Prohibited Device — four counts

These are the charge titles as Peel Regional Police printed them. Several are abbreviated past the point where the offence can be identified: “Possession of a Firearm” and “Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession” are not Criminal Code charge names, and no section numbers are published for any of the seventeen.

Four loaded prohibited firearms out of five seized

The warrants of May 8, 2023 produced five firearms. Four of the seventeen counts allege possession of a loaded prohibited firearm, and another four allege possession of a prohibited device. The release does not reconcile the two figures: it does not say which of the five guns grounds which count, whether the fifth was lawfully held, or what the four prohibited devices were. No firearm is described by make, type, calibre or restricted-versus-prohibited status, and no round count is published for any of them.

Nor does anything in the release connect the firearms and drugs seized in May 2023 to the February 2022 shooting, beyond their appearing on one charge sheet. Whether the 2023 warrants were obtained in the shooting investigation or in a separate trafficking file is not stated.

The conspiracy count

A person cannot conspire alone. The second count on the sheet is conspiracy to commit murder, which on its face alleges an agreement between Johnson and at least one other person. Peel Regional Police name no second accused, publish no description of one, do not say whether anyone else has been charged in the four years since the shooting, and do not say whether any suspect remains outstanding. The release carries no quotation and names no officer; the only contact given is the Major Crime Unit line at 905-453-2121, extension 2290.

What is missing from the record

No section number appears for any of the seventeen counts, and several charge titles are abbreviated past identification. The victim is not named and no age is given. No round count, no casings, no weapon used in the shooting and no motive is published. The five firearms seized in 2023 are not described, and the fentanyl and cocaine are not weighed. The number and municipalities of the GTA addresses searched are absent, as is the date the Canada-wide warrant issued. No co-accused is named or described despite a conspiracy count, no outstanding suspect is mentioned, no bail outcome or court date is published, no explanation is offered for the nine days between arrest and announcement or for the four and a half years between shooting and arrest, and no officer is named or quoted.

No criminal organization, street gang or outlaw motorcycle club has been named by Peel Regional Police in connection with this file, and none is alleged here. None of the seventeen counts has been tested in court and Johnson is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
