Twice in Late August They Could Not Get It to Burn, and at Ten Past Four This Morning It Did: a Third Suspected Arson at the El Khawa Restaurant on Jean-Talon Est Leaves Nine Apartments Evacuated and Three Floors Written Off (September 17, 2026)
MONTREAL — The first two attempts failed. On August 30 someone smashed the window of the El Khawa restaurant on rue Jean-Talon Est, left incendiary material on the floor and ran when a passer-by saw him; nothing caught. On August 31 someone got inside and lit it, and neighbours had the fire out before police reached the door. At approximately 4:10 a.m. on Thursday, September 17, 2026, the third attempt worked. The SPVM took a 911 call for a fire at the same commercial unit, the nine apartments above it were emptied in the dark, and by the time the flames were down the building’s three floors were, in the words of an SPVM spokesperson, damaged beyond repair. Nobody was hurt. Nobody has been arrested in any of the three.
There is no police news release on this file, and there was none on the first two either. Everything below comes from two named SPVM spokespeople talking to reporters.
What the SPVM Said, and Who Said It
- The call: 911, at approximately 4:10 a.m., Thursday, September 17, 2026.
- Where: a commercial unit on rue Jean-Talon Est, Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough. CTV, Noovo and The Canadian Press place it near 22e Avenue; La Presse places it near 21e rue. No outlet published a civic street number.
- Spokesperson Jeanne Drouin: firefighters were sent to bring the fire under control, and because apartments sit above the commercial unit, preventive evacuations were carried out. On the cause: “Lors de l’examen des lieux, des éléments d’incendie criminel ont été identifiés, ce qui laisse penser que l’incendie est d’origine criminelle” — elements of arson were identified during examination of the scene, suggesting the fire is of criminal origin.
- Spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant: the fire had already spread when crews arrived, prompting evacuations from the second and third floors; traces of an accelerant were found once it was brought under control; the damage is major and all three floors are considered damaged beyond repair; there were no casualties.
- Evacuated: nine apartments. No outlet published a count of residents.
- Injuries: none.

- Arrests: none, in this fire or either of the previous two. All three investigations remain open.

Three Times in Eighteen Days
August 30 to September 17 is eighteen days. In that window the same storefront was attacked three times, escalating each time: incendiary material left and no fire, then a fire small enough for bystanders to beat out, then a fire that took the building.
That escalation is the story, and it is the only thing anyone has said about pattern. The SPVM has not said the three fires are the work of the same person, has not released a suspect description for any of them, and has not attached a motive to any of them. What Brabant confirmed is narrower and still significant: the business has been targeted three times and no one has been arrested for any of it.
The Two Failed Attempts
On Sunday, August 30, 2026, at around 3:00 a.m., police took a 911 call about a man intending to set fire to the restaurant. Investigators say he smashed a window to start a fire inside, then fled after noticing a citizen witness, who later spoke to officers. There was no sign of fire and no damage to the restaurant — but incendiary material was found at the scene. A perimeter went up and investigators canvassed surveillance cameras nearby.
The following morning, Monday, August 31, 2026, at 5:10 a.m., they came back. SPVM spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said that “lorsque les policiers sont arrivés sur les lieux, des citoyens étaient déjà en train d’éteindre le feu à l’intérieur du restaurant” — when officers arrived, citizens were already putting the fire out inside the restaurant. She added that according to first reports the suspect had managed to get inside to set the fire and fled before police arrived. No incendiary material was found that day and the damage was judged minor. The file went to the arson section. No arrest.

Neither has been identified by police as the same address as this one, and no link between them is asserted here. That is flagged below as an open question rather than folded into the count.
A Naming Problem Worth Stating Plainly
The outlets do not agree on what is in the building. CTV News Montreal, its French sister service Noovo and their photo captions going back to August 30 consistently identify the targeted business as the El Khawa restaurant. La Presse, in its September 17 story, describes the ground floor as holding two commercial units — a bakery and a restaurant it names as Sultan Istanbul Kebab. The Canadian Press simply calls it “a business.”
Rather than pick, this briefing uses the name carried consistently by the outlet that has covered all three fires: the target is the El Khawa restaurant. That another restaurant and a bakery may share the ground floor is reported, and is not the same claim as saying either of them was the target. Neither is asserted here.
What Nobody Has Said
No gang, street gang, criminal organization, mafia family or outlaw motorcycle club has been named by the SPVM, by any outlet, or by anyone else in connection with any of the three fires. None is named or implied here. No extortion demand has been reported. No connection to any other business, any other fire or any other file has been asserted by police.
Nothing has been tested in court, and nobody has been charged.
