Seventy-Two Grams of Cocaine, 262 Tablets and a Machete Out of a GMC Sierra on Dorothy Street: Niagara Police Charge Trevor McLaren, 39, and Mario Michienzi, 34, After a Welland Traffic Stop (August 24, 2026)

The Niagara Regional Police Service put this file out on Monday, August 24, 2026, two days after the stop that produced it. What began as uniform officers noticing a plate that did not belong on the truck it was bolted to ended with six controlled substances, four categories of pills, a machete and two Welland men in front of a justice on a Sunday.

The setting is deliberately ordinary. On Saturday, August 22, 2026, officers from 3 District — the detachment that covers Welland and Pelham — were on what the force calls proactive patrol in the area of East Main Street in the City of Welland. That is patrol without a call attached to it: officers driving a defined area looking for something that does not fit.

What did not fit was a white GMC Sierra. Officers stopped it on Dorothy Street. The driver was arrested for using plates not authorized for the vehicle, and the search that followed the arrest is where the file turns.

What Was in the Truck

The inventory the NRPS published is not a single-commodity haul. It runs across stimulants, opioids, hallucinogens and cannabis at the same time, and it carries a separate stack of diverted pharmaceuticals alongside the powder.

The pill count is the number worth holding onto. Thirty-five morphine tablets, forty-eight hydromorphone tablets and sixty-eight oxycodone tablets is 151 identified opioid doses, and on top of that sit 111 tablets the force describes only as an unknown substance. That is 262 tablets in one vehicle.

The fifteen dollars is worth a sentence of its own. It is the entire cash total in a file the force is treating as trafficking, and it is charged as proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000 against both men. Whatever this vehicle was carrying, it was not carrying the day’s takings.

The Charge Sheets

Two men from Welland were charged, twenty-eight counts between them, and the two sheets are near-identical on the drug counts and diverge only at the edges.

Trevor McLaren, 39, of Welland faces sixteen counts: seven of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, one of possession of cannabis for the purpose of distributing, one of possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000, two of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, one of possession of a Schedule III substance for the purpose of trafficking, and one of simple possession of a Schedule I substance. On top of the criminal counts he is charged with using a plate not authorized for the vehicle, failing to signal for a turn, and failing to have an insurance card.

Mario Michienzi, 34, of Welland faces twelve counts: the same seven of possession of a Schedule I substance for the purpose of trafficking, the same cannabis distribution count, the same proceeds count, the same Schedule III trafficking count and the same simple possession count. His one non-drug charge is failing to properly wear a seatbelt.

The two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 land on McLaren alone. Three stolen Ontario licence plates were recovered; the force has not said which plate was on the truck and which were loose.

What the Force Did Not Say

No criminal organization is named anywhere in this release. There is no project name, no unit beyond 3 District uniform patrol, no reference to a wider investigation, and no claim that either man is connected to anyone else. This is charged as what it appears to be on the face of the release: a roadside stop that turned into a trafficking file.

The force also does not say who was driving. The release identifies the driver only as the person arrested for the plate offence; the charge sheets suggest it was McLaren, who alone carries the plate, signal and insurance card counts, while Michienzi alone carries the seatbelt count. The NRPS does not spell that out.

Missing. Which of the two men was driving. The outcome of the bail hearing. The street value the force places on the seizure. What the 111 unknown tablets are. Where the three stolen plates were taken from. Whether either man was already bound by a release order or a firearms prohibition. Whether the two men are alleged to have been operating together or simply travelling together. The next court date.

Not claimed. That any gang, syndicate or outlaw motorcycle club is behind this. The NRPS names none, and none is asserted here. The expandable baton, the knives and the machete are seized items, not charged weapons offences — no weapons count appears on either sheet.

Update trigger. The bail outcome and the first appearance date. Any analyst confirmation on the 111 unknown tablets. Any follow-on charge arising from the three stolen plates. Any statement connecting this stop to a larger NRPS drug file.
