Four Chilean Nationals Charged in York Region ‘Crime Tourism’ Break-In Spree Targeting GTA Homes

Project Towns — Suspects Entered Canada Legally to Commit Coordinated Property Crimes
York Regional Police have charged four Chilean nationals with dozens of criminal offences in connection with a string of at least 20 residential break-and-enters across the Greater Toronto Area, in what authorities are describing as an organized ‘crime tourism’ operation.

Operation Overview

York Regional Police began investigating the series of break-and-enters in April 2026. Three of the suspects were arrested after officers responded to a break-in call near Clark Avenue and Dufferin Street. The fourth suspect was arrested after search warrants were executed at residences in Toronto and Mississauga.

Modus Operandi

According to investigators, the suspects employed sophisticated techniques to gain access to residences and evade detection. During the searches, police found stolen property, break-in tools, and notably, a radio frequency jammer.

Method of Operation

  • Entry Point: Rear basement glass doors were the primary point of entry for most break-ins.
  • Target Items: The suspects targeted cash, high-end clothing, jewelry, and firearms.
  • Technology: A radio frequency jammer was used to disable security cameras, Wi-Fi systems, and alarm systems, making detection extremely difficult.

Evidence Recovered During Searches

  • Stolen Property: Cash, jewelry, high-end clothing, and firearms.
  • Break-in Tools: Professional equipment used to gain entry into residences.
  • Radio Frequency Jammer: Electronic device used to disable security systems.

Growing Trend

Police say the investigation remains ongoing and that additional charges are anticipated. The arrests highlight a growing trend of internationally organized criminal groups traveling to Canada specifically to commit property crimes.

The use of sophisticated technology, including signal jammers, demonstrates the organized nature of these criminal operations, which often involve thorough planning and coordination across multiple jurisdictions.
