The man stabbed to death inside the apartment building at 15 Tangreen Court in North York on Saturday night is Albert Gundran, 57. The name did not come from the Toronto Police Service release that announced the identification — that release still will not open — but from an update to a CP24 and CTV News Toronto report by Joanna Lavoie, stamped 9:36 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, September 27, four hours and forty-one minutes after the force said it had published the identification, four hours after this site filed a briefing recording that no outlet had carried it, and roughly twenty-five hours after Gundran was killed. Meir Cohen, 46, of Toronto remains charged with second-degree murder and is presumed innocent.
What is new, and what it took to get it
Three facts entered the readable public record with the update: the dead man’s name, his age and his home municipality. Until Sunday night the entire published description of him consisted of his sex and the phrase “a man in his fifties,” attributed to police. Fifty-seven is consistent with that. It reached the public when a broadcaster updated a story.
The dead man lived in another municipality
15 Tangreen Court sits in the Newtonbrook pocket of North York, just south of Steeles Avenue West near Hilda Avenue and west of Yonge Street. Steeles is the boundary: north of it is York Region, and Vaughan is the municipality on the western half of that frontier. Gundran lived on the other side of a city line from the building in which he was killed.
That is a geographic fact and not, on anything published so far, an investigative one. Nothing in the record says whether he lived close to Tangreen Court or at the far end of Vaughan, whether he was visiting someone in the building, whether he knew Cohen, or how the two men came to be in the same place. Police have described what happened only as a physical altercation between two people, one of whom stabbed the other.
