The Shots Were Fired at Five Past Eleven on Saturday Night and Nobody Called Police Until Ten to Ten the Next Morning: Durham Officers Find Numerous Casings and a Hit House Near Taunton and Salem, and Call It Isolated (Originally Reported September 14, 2026)

AJAX — Durham Regional Police published this file on Monday, September 14, 2026, two days after the gunfire, and it is not a story that broke today. Somebody emptied a firearm at a house in the area of Taunton Road East and Salem Road in Ajax at approximately 11:05 p.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Police did not attend until approximately 9:50 a.m. on Sunday, September 13 — nearly eleven hours later. When West Division officers got there they found, in the service’s own words, “numerous shell casings in the area and obvious damage to the residence caused by the discharged firearm.” Nobody was hurt. Nobody has been identified. The release contains no suspect, no vehicle, no round count and no motive.

The sequence in the release is the unusual part, and Durham states it plainly rather than burying it: officers responded on Sunday morning, and it was “through further investigation” that they established the shooting had happened the night prior. The call, in other words, did not come when the shots were fired. It came after daylight, and the timing of the shooting was something investigators had to work out afterwards.

“Isolated” Without a Suspect

Two statements sit next to each other in this release and pull in opposite directions. The first is that the incident is believed to be isolated and that there is no risk to public safety. The second, one line later, is that there are no suspect details at this time.

Both can be true. A service can form a view that a shooting was directed at a particular address, and therefore does not represent a broader danger, without yet knowing who fired. But the release does not explain the basis for the first statement, and it is the basis that would make it informative. Durham does not say whether investigators believe the house was targeted, whether they believe the occupants were known to whoever fired, or whether the assessment rests on anything beyond the fact that nobody was hit and nothing else was reported that weekend. The elapsed figure of roughly eleven hours is this briefing’s arithmetic from the two times Durham publishes; the service does not characterise the gap or comment on it.

What the gap costs an investigation is not speculative. Casings sat on the ground overnight. Any vehicle involved had a night and a morning to be moved or destroyed. Residential video systems on a suburban street overwrite on a cycle measured in days, and the window Durham is now asking the public to search is one that was already closing before the first officer arrived.
