Someone in Saint-Adalbert called police on Monday morning, August 24, 2026, to report what sounded like gunshots being fired from Route 285. The Sûreté du Québec had a vehicle stopped and five men out of it in custody by around half past eight, a short distance from where the shots were reported. Nobody was hit. At least one dog was wounded.

The rural stretch of Route 285 that runs through Saint-Adalbert, in the MRC de L’Islet in the Chaudière-Appalaches region, is not a place that generates firearms calls at that hour. The speed of the interception is the striking part of the account: the report came in, and the suspect vehicle was still close enough to be located and stopped with all five occupants inside.

What Investigators Were Still Establishing

The Sûreté du Québec described its work on Monday as being at two open questions. The first was the calibre of the weapon. The second was the degree of involvement of each of the people arrested — which is police shorthand for the fact that five men in a car is not the same thing as five shooters, and the force had not yet sorted out who did what.

The force also indicated that some of those taken into custody may be minors. That has consequences downstream: any accused under eighteen at the time of the offence is covered by the publication ban in the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which means the names of some of the five may never be released even if charges are laid.

What the Sûreté du Québec Has Confirmed

  • A report of possible gunshots fired from Route 285 in Saint-Adalbert on Monday morning, August 24, 2026
  • Five arrests were made at around 8:30 a.m.
  • The suspect vehicle was intercepted a short distance from the scene of the reported shots
  • All five occupants were male and all five were arrested
  • Police indicated some of those arrested may be minors
  • No human victim was identified in the first hours of the investigation
  • At least one dog was wounded
  • Investigators were working to establish the calibre of the weapon involved
  • Investigators were working to establish the involvement of each of the people arrested
  • No names, no charges and no criminal organization have been made public

The Dog

A wounded animal is the only confirmed casualty in the file and it is more than a curiosity. It establishes that at least one round found a target, which moves the report from “possible gunshots” toward a discharge with physical evidence attached — a wound track, potentially a projectile, and a location that can be tied to the roadway. It is the kind of detail that in practice determines whether a file like this ends in charges or in a released group of five.

The Sûreté du Québec has not said what kind of dog, where it was, whether it survived, or whether it was the intended target of anything.

Where This File Stands

Verified. That the Sûreté du Québec made five arrests at around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 24, 2026; that the trigger was a report of possible gunshots fired from Route 285 in Saint-Adalbert; that the suspect vehicle and its five male occupants were intercepted a short distance away; that police indicated some of those arrested may be minors; that no human victim was identified at first look; that at least one dog was wounded; and that investigators were still validating the calibre of the weapon and the involvement of each of the five. One published account opened and read.

Missing. The exact time the shots were reported. The identities and ages of the five. Whether a firearm was recovered from the vehicle. What the weapon was. What, if anything, was being shot at. The condition of the wounded dog. Whether the five were held or released. Whether charges will be laid and by which prosecutor’s office.

Not claimed. That this incident is connected to any criminal organization, to any dispute, or to any other file. The Sûreté du Québec has named no group and made no such statement, and none is asserted here. Nor is any assertion made about which of the five, if any, discharged a weapon — that is the exact question the force said it was still working on.

Update trigger. Any charge or court appearance arising from the arrests. Confirmation that a firearm was seized and what type. Any statement on a target or motive. Any release of the adults among the five. Any linkage to another incident in the MRC de L’Islet.
