Members of the Ottawa Police Service Neighbourhood Resource Team, assisted by the force’s Tactical Unit, executed a Criminal Code search warrant on October 1, 2026 at a business in the 600 block of Somerset Street West in Centretown, and the force says the investigation targeted the alleged sale of illegal nicotine and tobacco products. Officers seized 33,894 cigarettes, 528 tins of nicotine pouches, 47 vape devices and approximately $4,000 in Canadian currency. A 44-year-old Ottawa man is charged with possession of proceeds obtained by crime and possession of unstamped tobacco products. He is not named. The release does not say whether he was held or released, gives no court date, publishes no file or occurrence number, names no officer, and does not identify the business. It ends with the statement: “The investigation has concluded, and no further information is available at this time.”

What the Force Published

The warrant was a Criminal Code warrant, in the force’s own words, and it was executed on October 1, 2026. The release was published the following day, October 2, at 11:45 a.m. The unit named first is the Neighbourhood Resource Team, and the Tactical Unit is named as assisting. No Ottawa Police drug unit, guns-and-gangs unit, provincial tobacco enforcement team, Canada Revenue Agency or Ontario Ministry of Finance partner appears anywhere in the document.

Both counts are attributed by the release to the Criminal Code, and neither is given a section number. The force does not say which of the four categories of seized property grounds which count, and does not say whether the nicotine pouches or the 47 vape devices support any charge at all: the only count naming a product names unstamped tobacco. Where the cash figure comes from, and whether it is alleged to be the proceeds referred to in the first count, is not stated.

Two Counts, One Unnamed Accused

The accused is published only as a 44-year-old Ottawa man. That is the whole of his description: no name, no street, no custody status, no court date and no courthouse. A charge of possession of proceeds obtained by crime is an allegation by police that property in his possession was derived from crime; nothing in the release has been tested in court, and he is presumed innocent.

The release ends with the sentence that the investigation has concluded and that no further information is available. It is the force’s own statement about its own file, recorded here as such.

Charges, as the force words them

  • A 44-year-old Ottawa man, not named: possession of proceeds obtained by crime; possession of unstamped tobacco products. The release places both counts under the Criminal Code and cites no section for either.

What the release does not contain

  • The accused’s name, and his custody status: neither appears. The document says nothing about release conditions, an undertaking, a bail hearing, a prior order or a court date, and the word “conditions” appears nowhere in it.
  • The business: not named, and no civic address number is published for the 600 block of Somerset Street West.
  • Allocation: the release does not say which seized item grounds which count, or whether the pouches and vape devices ground any count.
  • Valuation: no dollar value, brand, origin or stamping detail is published for the 33,894 cigarettes, and the pouches and devices are not valued or described.
  • File identifiers: no occurrence or file number, no named officer and no individual quotation; the only other text is the force’s statement that it “remains committed to addressing the unlawful sale of tobacco and nicotine products and to supporting community safety through proactive enforcement and regulatory compliance initiatives.”

The accused has not been named by police and is presumed innocent until proven guilty; neither count has been tested in court. Both charges are reproduced in the Ottawa Police Service’s own wording, and the attribution of both to the Criminal Code is the force’s. No criminal organization, street gang, outlaw motorcycle club or cartel has been named by anyone in connection with this file, and none is suggested here. Ottawa sits inside the National Capital Region, part of the primary footprint of this beat, and contraband is on this beat as a subject in its own right. No publication ban is mentioned in the source.
