A man approached two people near the corner of rue Jacques-Rousseau and avenue Nicolas-Joly in Rivière-des-Prairies on Thursday evening and fired several shots at them from close range. A 23-year-old woman was hit in the upper body and an 18-year-old man in the lower body; both survived. The shooter left and has not been found. The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal is treating it as an attempted murder, has a police-operated street camera at the location, and has published nothing about the file at all.

What happened on Jacques-Rousseau

The call came in at around 7:40 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026. SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant described the sequence plainly: “The suspect approached the victims and at one point, several shots were fired in their direction.” The suspect then fled in a direction police have not specified.

Both victims were taken to hospital. The woman, 23, was wounded in the upper body; the man, 18, in the lower body. Neither set of injuries was described as life-threatening. Police have not released either name, and have not said whether the two were together, whether either was known to police, or whether the shooter knew them.

The camera at the corner

Two things about the SPVM response stand out on the published record. The first is that a canine unit was deployed — a perimeter measure, used when officers believe the shooter left on foot or abandoned something nearby. The second is that investigators are reviewing footage from an urban security camera operated by the SPVM itself, installed at the location where the shooting happened.

That is a meaningful detail. The force is not canvassing for doorbell video and hoping; it has its own camera at the intersection, and it has had one there long enough to be part of the immediate investigative plan. Police are separately looking for the suspect’s vehicle, which suggests the departure was not on foot — though no description of that vehicle has been issued to the public.
