SCARBOROUGH — The Toronto Police Service has now issued a release on the Bellamy Road North vehicle arson, and it converts a suspected arson into a described one. The force says an unknown suspect walked up to several vehicles parked in the driveway of a residence, poured an accelerant onto them, and set two alight. Images of that suspect and video of the incident itself have been published. The suspect vehicle is a black Hyundai sedan.
This is a follow-up to the Gangland Files briefing of August 27, which was written from CTV News Toronto, CP24 and CBC reporting and recorded that the Toronto Police Service had issued no release at time of filing. The release landed the following day, Friday, August 28, 2026 at 11:45 a.m., carried by 43 Division under case 2026-1791248.
What the Release Adds That the Outlet Accounts Did Not Have
- A timed call: police responded at approximately 1:21 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026. The earlier accounts placed the fire only “shortly before 1:30 a.m.”
- A single suspect: the release describes one unknown suspect throughout. No earlier account had settled the number.
- An accelerant, and where it went: the suspect is said to have approached several vehicles in the driveway and poured an accelerant onto them, then ignited it on two, causing them to catch fire. A third vehicle was damaged as a result of the fire rather than being lit directly.
- A suspect description: light complexion, slim build. Last seen wearing a black face-covering, a black hooded sweater with the hood up, black gloves, and running shoes with light socks.
- A suspect vehicle: a black Hyundai sedan. The suspect fled the area in it.
- Imagery: images of the suspect and video of the incident have been released, the video posted to the force’s YouTube channel.
- The file: case 2026-1791248, held by 43 Division. Corporate Communications for 43 Division issued the release.
- Still absent: no arrest, no motive, no named investigative unit beyond the division, no officer quoted, no reference in the release to the occupant of the residence, and no criminal organization.
Gloves, a Face Covering, and a Car Waiting
The description the Toronto Police Service has published is of someone equipped for the job rather than someone who improvised one. Black face-covering. Hood up. Black gloves at the end of August. A vehicle to leave in.
Gloves in particular are worth pausing on, because they serve two functions at once in a file like this: they keep prints off whatever container carried the accelerant, and they protect the hands of a person about to ignite a liquid at arm’s length. Neither the container nor the accelerant has been described by the force. Whether either was recovered is not stated in the release, and that is the single largest remaining gap in the public record.
Poured on Several, Lit on Two
The mechanics the release sets out are more deliberate than a car fire that spread. The accelerant went onto several vehicles. Only two were ignited. The third took its damage from the resulting fire.
That sequence means a person stood in a residential driveway at twenty past one in the morning long enough to wet down more than one car before striking anything. It is slower and noisier than the alternative and it produces a fire that is harder to explain away. It also, on the account released, made no attempt to reach the house.
What the Release Does Not Say, and Why That Is Conspicuous
The Toronto Police Service release describes the location only as the Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East area and refers only to “a residence.” It does not identify the occupant, does not state a motive, and does not characterise the fire as targeted.
Readers of the earlier briefing will know that the driveway belongs to Salma Zahid, the Member of Parliament for Scarborough Centre, and that the Prime Minister publicly described the fire as a cowardly act of violence and intimidation. None of that appears in the police release, and this briefing does not import a motive the force has not asserted. What the release does is narrow the file: one person, equipped, accelerant, two ignitions, a black Hyundai sedan, and now on video.
