A 29-year-old man who had been found on Saturday, August 22 with heavy stab wounds to the upper body in an apartment on avenue Dupuis, in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, died of those injuries on the Tuesday. The Service de police de la Ville de Montréal confirmed the death at 2:35 p.m. He is the 18th homicide on Montreal territory since the start of the year, and the fourth in ten days.

The unusual part sits in the middle of the file. Officers arrested a 49-year-old man inside that apartment on the Saturday. Investigators interviewed him, and let him go without laying a single charge. The SPVM says he remains an important witness in the case. Three days after the stabbing and hours after the death, nobody stands accused of it.

An Arrest, Then a Witness

The movement of the 49-year-old from arrest to witness is the part of this file that carries information. Police found him in the apartment where a man was bleeding out. They took him in. Then, having spoken to him, they released him with nothing on paper and publicly recategorised him as somebody whose account matters to the investigation.

That does not mean the file is closed against him or anybody else. It means that whatever the SPVM heard did not, on the Saturday, support a charge, and that the force is willing to say so in the same breath as confirming a death. When the classification later moves from armed assault to homicide, as it did on Tuesday, the evidentiary bar an investigator has to clear moves with it — and any decision on charges now sits with the section des crimes majeurs rather than the responding investigators.

Four in Ten Days

The pace is the wider story. La Presse puts this death as the fourth homicide on SPVM territory in ten days. The 17th was Jean-Christophe Desrosiers, 22, shot at the wheel of a pickup truck on Henri-Julien Avenue in the Plateau on August 20, a killing that produced two arraignments inside four days and, from two Montreal newsrooms citing unnamed sources, two different organizational attributions — one to the Blood Family Mafia, the other to a Trois-Rivières outfit. The SPVM named neither.

This file carries no such attribution from anyone. It is an indoor stabbing in a residential borough on a Saturday afternoon, with one man dead and one man released. Nothing in the reporting connects it to the Montreal street gangs or to any other organization, and no such connection is made here. It sits in the count because a person was killed in Montreal, which is the only claim the SPVM has made about it.

What Has Not Been Said
