DOHA & VANCOUVER — Infamous gangland hitman and cartel-linked broker Rabih “Robby” Alkhalil remains locked in a high-security Qatari detention facility as Canadian federal prosecutors, the RCMP, and CFSEU-BC navigate complex legal corridors to secure his return to a Canadian prison cell.

Alkhalil, 38, who orchestrated one of the most audacious prison breaches in Canadian history when two conspirators dressed as contractors extracted him from the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in July 2022, was nabbed in Doha while operating under a fraudulent alias. Because Canada lacks a formal bilateral extradition treaty with Qatar, diplomatic and intelligence channels are managing his temporary detention while his escape crew faces trial in British Columbia.

Extradition Complexities & The Break Crew Trial

While Alkhalil remains held by the Qatari Ministry of Interior, Canadian law enforcement has successfully reeled in the logistics team that facilitated his flight. Accomplice John Potvin was extradited from Spain to Vancouver to face charges of Prison Breach and Criminal Conspiracy alongside co-defendants Ryan Van Gool and Edward Ayoub.

During his three years on the run, Alkhalil was tried in absentia and convicted of first-degree murder for the 2012 execution of Sandip Duhre at Vancouver’s Wall Centre. That conviction was added to a previous life sentence for the 2012 Little Italy execution of John Raposo in Toronto and a major cocaine importation sentence out of Quebec.
